The Hair Extension Edit: Tapes, Wefts, K-Tips and Clip-Ins Decoded

Let's be honest. We've all paused mid-scroll on a Kardashian Instagram post and thought: how is her hair so impossibly thick? Or watched Jennifer Lopez walk a red carpet with that signature glossy, floor-grazing volume and quietly Googled "hair extensions near me." You're not alone and more importantly, you're not far off. The secret to celebrity hair isn't some genetic lottery. It's extensions, great colour, and a stylist who knows what they're doing.

Consider this your no-fluff guide to understanding the most popular extension methods and more importantly, which one is actually right for your hair.

First, a Word on Why Celebrities Are Obsessed

The Kardashian-Jenner family practically built a beauty empire on the back of great hair. Kim's sleek, waist-length looks? Extensions. Kylie's dramatic colour transformations without ever frying her hair? Extensions (and wigs, let's be real). Chrissy Teigen has been refreshingly open about it, she's talked about her love of clip-ins for instant glam without the commitment. And Jennifer Lopez, who somehow looks more luminous with every passing decade, has had extensions woven into her signature look for years.

The thing these women have in common isn't money (well, not just money) it's that they have access to stylists who understand which method works for their hair type, their lifestyle, and the look they're going for. That expertise matters. A lot.

The Main Players: What's Actually Out There

Wefts — Butterfly Beads and Sew-In

Wefts are strips of hair attached to your natural hair using one of two methods: butterfly beads (small metal clamps that grip your hair strands) or the traditional sew-in, where hair is braided into cornrows and the weft is sewn directly onto them.

These are the heavy lifters of the extension world because they are long-lasting, substantial, and genuinely impressive for adding serious volume and length. They suit thicker hair textures that can carry the weight without stress on the scalp.

The catch? They take time to install and need professional hands for removal. Go too tight and you'll feel it — scalp tension is real and not something to push through. When they're done right though? The result is dramatic in the best possible way.

Best for: Thick hair. Statement length. Someone who wants longevity and doesn't mind regular salon check-ins.

K-Tips (Keratin Tips) — The Seamless One

K-tips are individual strands of extension hair bonded to your own hair using keratin glue, fused with a heat tool. The result is incredibly natural — these move like your own hair because each bond is small and discreet.

They last up to three months, hold up beautifully with heat styling, and when applied by a skilled stylist, are genuinely undetectable. This is the method favoured by people who want long-term, everyday-wear extensions that don't require a second thought.

The investment is real — in both time to install and cost — and removal absolutely needs a professional. Applied incorrectly they can cause damage, so this is not the place to cut corners on who's doing them.

Best for: Medium to thick hair. Long-term wear. People who want extensions that simply disappear into their hair.

Clip-Ins — The One-Night Transformation

Clip-ins are exactly what they sound like: wefts with small clips attached that you can put in and take out yourself. No salon appointment, no commitment, no bond residue. Just instant transformation.

Chrissy Teigen is a clip-in convert for good reason — they're the perfect tool when you want a little extra something for an event without any of the ongoing maintenance. Pop them in before dinner, out before bed.

They're also a great way to test-drive a length or volume before committing to a semi-permanent method. Think of them as the try-before-you-buy of the extension world.

The trade-off is that daily wear isn't ideal — the clips can become uncomfortable and if placement is off, they're visible. They require a bit of practice to blend properly, but once you've got the hang of it, they're genuinely game-changing for an occasion.

Best for: All hair types. Occasional wear. Anyone who wants flexibility and zero commitment.

Tape Extensions — Our Method at Podium

Tape extensions are ultra-thin adhesive strips applied close to the scalp, sandwiching a small section of your natural hair between two panels. The result? Flat, discreet, and remarkably natural-looking.

This is the method we specialise in at Podium, and it's not by accident. Tape extensions sit in a genuinely sweet spot: they're quick to apply, comfortable to wear, lightweight enough for finer hair textures, and significantly gentler than methods that use heavy bonding agents or metal clamps. They move with your hair rather than sitting on top of it.

We offer invisible tape (ultra-thin for the most seamless blend), regular tape, and slim tape for a lighter feel with more natural movement. Your stylist will advise which is right for your hair density and the look you're after.

They last around six to eight weeks before a reapplication — at that point your hair grows out and the tapes shift, which is completely normal. A maintenance visit brings them back up where they belong. Between appointments, the care is simple: be gentle at the root area, avoid oil-based products near the tapes (they'll loosen the adhesive), and use a soft-bristle brush.

Best for: Fine to medium hair. Anyone after a natural, low-profile result. People who want something that feels effortless day-to-day.

How to Actually Choose

Here's how we think through it in a consultation:

Hair texture first. Fine hair and heavy wefts aren't friends. Tape extensions and clip-ins work beautifully for finer hair because they're lightweight and won't stress the root area. Thicker hair can handle the weight of wefts or K-tips without issue.

What does your week look like? If you're a gym person, spend your summers in the pool or someone who washes their hair four times a week, that factors in. Tape extensions are adaptable to active lifestyles, just follow the care guidelines. K-tips are also resilient once settled in. Clip-ins come out before anything strenuous.

How long do you want to wear them? Clip-ins are a Tuesday-to-Sunday relationship. Tapes are moved up every 6 or so weeks. K-tips are a 2-3 month relationship. Wefts sit somewhere in the middle depending on the method. Knowing your runway helps narrow it down fast.

Budget, the full picture. Clip-ins have the lowest upfront cost but offer no longevity for everyday wear. Semi-permanent methods (tapes, K-tips, wefts) have a higher investment, but that includes the transformation, the expertise, and the maintenance appointments that keep them looking their best.

Keeping Your Extensions (and Your Hair) Healthy

This is where we put on our hair health hat and at Podium, it's a hat we never take off.

Extensions are a tool, not a shortcut. Used with the right method, the right care, and regular professional check-ins, they pose no threat to your natural hair. Used carelessly, left too long without maintenance, or applied without proper assessment and that's where problems start.

A few non-negotiables:

  1. Sulfate and Protein-free shampoos and conditioners ONLY. Sulfates strip the adhesive and dry out the extension hair, which doesn't have the benefit of natural oil from your scalp travelling down the shaft.

  2. Brush from the ends up. Always. Use a soft-bristle brush or extension-safe paddle brush and work out tangles before they compound.

  3. Avoid heavy oils and serums at the root area — particularly with tape extensions. Mid-lengths and ends are fine.

  4. Heat styling is absolutely fine with most extension types, but keep the tool away from the bond or tape area and use a heat protectant.

  5. Book your maintenance appointments. Extensions that have grown out beyond their window don't look better with time, they look messier and they put more tension on your natural hair. Stay on top of it.

The Podium Approach

We don't do one-size-fits-all here. Before we recommend any method, we assess your hair including its density, texture, current health, and how it's been treated previously. We look at your lifestyle, your goals, and your maintenance appetite. And then we give you our honest recommendation.

Right now our focus is on tape extensions. Not because they're the only method worth knowing about, but because for the vast majority of our clients, particularly those with fine to medium hair who want a natural, wearable result, they deliver consistently. They're also the most hair-health-conscious semi-permanent option on the market when applied correctly. If we feel tape's aren't right for you, we wont push you to do tapes! Remember hair health first, always.

If you're curious about whether extensions are right for you. whether you're chasing Jennifer Lopez volume, Kardashian length, or just a little lift for a big occasion come in and talk to us, book a consultation. We'll give you the full picture.
